Top 10 Fashion Trends of 2015

Saturday, January 02, 2016

With new year, I'm beginning to delve into my annual rituals to start the year. In my eyes, there is nothing better than sending off a year than with a little reflection, a few horoscopes and a whole lot of celebration. While the horoscopes and celebration part will be cropping up soon enough, the reflection part is something I can share with you all.

While 2015 had a lot of interesting moments on a personal front, in fashion matters we were treated to quite a few interesting trends that made their way from the runway and into local stores, and closets alike.

So in keeping with our theme of looking back, we've compiled a list of the top 10 fashion trends of 2015.

  1. Cutout Shoulder : Boy was this a favourite of ours! We became acquainted with the cutout shoulder way back in some of our earliest posts and have been a loyalist since. A special peak in its popularity was brought about in the 2015/2016 Spring/Summer collections where our runway counterparts sported it in all forms from dresses to tops and jackets
  2. Leather Pants: When it comes to leather pants, I'd describe my equation with them as love/hate. Although I've brought myself to wear them twice previously, I'm starting to veer away from my love for them.
  3. Denim: Denims are back baby and how! The fabric seems to be just about everywhere from tops to shirts to even bikinis. Whether it be distressed or jet black, denim is back with a vengeance and it seems its here to stay.
  4. Ponchos: Ponchoes, Capes, blanket scarves, whatever version you go for, the truth is this bulky piece of clothing that allows you to be chic and in trend whilst carrying around your blanket is the blessing of winter 2015. Since the day Burberry models strutted down the ramp with their carefully dangling blankets, these have been defined as the 'it' thing.

  5. Monochromatic Grey: Grey was the new black in Autumn 2015 and I loved enhancing this trend with a berry purple lip.
  6. Culottes: Another favorite that I wore to my heart's content this year were culottes. This particular silhouette appealed to my more bohemian and breezy personal style. Comfortable yet chic has always been my tagline and this goes perfectly with that theme, hiding most flaws yet incredibly flexible to pair with almost all of them. It's gotten to the point that they are even on rotation for my work wardrobe.
  7. Khaki: Khaki has a way of adding a strong militaristic undertone to even the most flirty and feminine silhouettes and I'm totally onboard with its transformational powers.

  8. Mules: The 90s shoe is back but this time in a less feminine and more edgy and minimalist look (atleast the earlier styles with their chunky heel and clean, smooth finish). The pair I'm wearing here was a favourite of mine but since my purchase, all sorts of designs have been popping up everywhere and this trend looks like its here to stay.
  9. Flared Denims: From skinnies reigning supreme for a long time followed by boyfriend jeans finally making a break through, the designers have took it a step further and the flared denim is back. Nostalgia anyone? Angira loves this trend but for me, I am still sticking to my boyfriend and hoping that trend doesn't disappear completely.
  10. Draped Skirt: Technically the draped skirt showed up first in Helmut Lang's 2014 show but I have since found it stacked on shelves pretty much everywhere and in our books the frequency and popularity of the trend is enough for us to cover it. Although I'm not a particular fan of the skin tight Lang style of the ruched and draped skirt, I've loved exploring the more relaxed variations that hug you in all the right places.
So now that you've seen our roundup, was there a particular trend that you loved or disliked from 2015?
