A Quick stop at Richmond, Tasmania
Sunday, October 03, 2021
If you've followed our various travels throughout the years, you may be aware that I'm always partial to a small town. On our trip to Tasmania, I fulfilled that in the form of Richmond, a picture perfect, sleepy little town, only 30 mins from Hobart. It was the perfect pit stop on our way to Hobart, post our Port Arthur adventures.
Richmond's claim to fame is twofold: first, it has about 50 Georgian architecture buildings that are beautifully preserved and now house cafes, galleries, accommodation and more. And secondly, it's home to the oldest bridge in Australia, the Richmond Bridge which was built by convicts in 1823 and finished in 1825.
As with most quaint towns, there isn't a whole lot to do in Richmond so I suggest the best option is to just soak in the atmosphere, historical sites and local goods. We opted to pick up snacks from one of the numerous cute bakeries in town and enjoy them on the go as we strolled around the streets to get a taste of Colonial Australia. Alternatively, a picnic on the grounds of the bridge -- which is still in use and is a great Instagram backdrop -- can also be a fun way to enjoy the town.
We chose not to dedicate a whole day to Richmond, instead choosing to stop here on the way to Hobart on a Saturday in anticipation for Hobart's famous Salamanca markets. But for those wanting to spend the whole day there, other sites of note include the Old Hobart Town Model Village and Australia's oldest prison, Richmond Gaol.
Despite the shorter visit, we loved having a quick one hour pit stop here and I'd definitely recommend squeezing it into your itinerary if you're got some hours to fill.
