Cesky Krumlov Day Trip from Prague

Sunday, July 29, 2018

A castle, a river flowing by, some hibernating bears and an enchanting snowfall – that’s pretty much all you need to paint the perfect fairy-tale picture.

We’re happy to report that a quaint town in the South Bohemian region of the Czech Republic encompasses all of these things and more.

Cesky Krumlov is the Czech Republic’s ode to the 16th century. Time has been paused and everything from the look and feel of the town to the meals you might find there are quintessentially medieval.

We headed there on a day trip from Prague and for the first and only time in our European sojourn, we relinquished control and opted for a tour to take us there and show us around.
Lucky for us, we didn’t quite have the “tour bus experience” you might be familiar with. In the 3 hour bus ride was us and one other traveller along with a guide, making the trip feel a lot more intimate than what a guided tour usually affords.

Now, let’s be honest, as you may expect of any small town, there isn’t a whole lot happening. So we headed straight for the star attraction – Cesky Krumlov Castle. The castle is grand by all means, but it looks even more so given that there’s not much else around besides the colourful homes of locals.

We wandered through the castle, learning about the history of the influential Rosenberg family and using the various vantage points to capture panoramic shots of the colourful roofs below and the beautiful river flowing past.

And though we didn’t get to see the castle’s famous bears (they were hibernating), the tale was enough to keep us amused. After the castle, our guide took us for lunch to a medieval tavern – for the exact kind of meal people would eat back in the Middle Ages. Now, as vegetarians we expected to come back with an empty stomach, anticipating that the options for us would be very limited.

But we were wrong.

Given that meat wasn’t so easily available to the masses back then and was also very expensive, there were plenty of vegetarian options, and delicious ones at that. I won’t venture an attempt to explain the exact names but the meal was as follows: a potato cake, barley salad, spinach salad, corn cake, and a dill and yoghurt sauce. And all this was followed by strudel for dessert.

The rest of our time in town was spent wandering by the river, exploring the local Christmas stalls, picking up some warm juice and heading to the other largest site in the area – the St Vitus Cathedral.
