Leaving your home country for one abroad is exciting and frightening at the same time. The truth is we normally forget some essentials even when just going away for a weekend trip so its only expected that going overseas can be quite a daunting experience. Never fear, we are here to help. We have put together what we believe is the ultimate checklist for your trip abroad.

Paperwork

Every country has its own laws and rules so our advice is to be prepared. It is much better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Proof of travel and return - This is documentation such as copies of airline tickets, hotel reservations and any other document that proves you are going to a specific place and returning to your home at a particular time.
  • Photo identification
  • Immunization records
  • A list from your doctor of all medications you take - A copy of the medications from your pharmacy is a good idea too.
  • Emergency traveler’s checks - It is rare to use these in recent years, but it is a good idea to have at least $200 on a traveler check tucked away just in case.

Now to be safe, make copies of all of these things. Also, make copies of everything in your wallet; front and back. If you are robbed or you lose a credit card, bank card, or identification, it is much easier to handle stopping someone from using them if you have a copy. The copy will show the card numbers, expiration dates, and the telephone numbers to call to stop them and have them reissued.

Make a list of family or friends along with their phone numbers and keep it in your wallet and an extra copy in your luggage. If you are in an accident abroad, they will have no way to let anyone know if you are not in the condition to tell them.

Banking

Make an appointment with your bank manager and explain where you are going and for how long. Have him make the proper notations so that when you use your bank card or credit card in another country it is not frozen until they confirm it is you.

Find out if they are connected with any bank in the area in which you are going, and how to arrange exchanging currency when needed.

If you are not planning to return, do not cancel your account until you have set up a new account and are able to use the new account which could take a week or so.

Luggage

Only take items that you actually wear. Make sure you use quality suitcases because it will have to be up to the call during luggage shipping.

Minimize what you take. Only take what you actually wear and think layers. If you need to put on an extra sweater, it is easier than lugging a heavy coat across the globe.

  • Electronics
  • Laptop
  • Tablets
  • Cell phone
  • Blow dryer

Accessories

Make sure you have all of these items fully charged before you leave. In addition to that purchase a lipstick size emergency charger. These are less than $20 and you can hook them to your keychain. You never know when you will find yourself stranded and you have a dead cell phone.

Take at least two electronic converters. You may not need them everywhere, but you will need them sometimes.  If you use hygiene products that require batteries you should bring some with you. Unless you are planning on staying an extended period of time, then it may be less expensive to buy a new razor and trimmers when you get to your destination.
