The Perfect Day at Jungfrau, Switzerland

Thursday, November 19, 2020

If you’ve grown up on steady diet of Bollywood movies like us, visiting Jungfrau will feel very familiar. The stunning Swiss Alps have been a classic trope of Hindi films since the 80s and the mountains have played witness to many of our favourite songs. As such this place was definitely on our bucket list but upon researching and finding many opinions along the lines of it being extremely overpriced and also having visited many similar "scenic views" of snow, I wasn't entirely surely if this would be something we'd actually enjoy. But I managed to carve out a day mixed with both bucket list items as well as mixing it with nature walks that are more up my alley, making this a great full day in the Jungfrau area.

We headed to Jungfrau – the highest point in Europe -- by a one hour train from our Airbnb in Wengen for a day trip. As expected, even in summer, this spot gets pretty chilly so we recommend packing some layers

There’s plenty to do in Jungfrau including skiing and sledding but having enjoyed those activities in peak winter in Canada, we wanted to simply enjoy the picturesque mountain tops.

Sphinx Observation Desk: We caught one of the super speedy special elevators to take us up to the Sphinx Observation Deck. The deck is open to the public and gives you a view of the stunning 22km long Aletsch glacier. Another popular activity on the deck was to feed the tonnes of birds that are floating around ready for a snack and a pet.

Alpine Sensation: A stunning 25m long passage connecting you to the Sphinx Hall, this area has plenty of beautiful snow sculptured and other tidbits to enjoy. However, be warned that the ice gets very slippery and it’s best to hang on to the railings.

Glacier Plateau:  If you want to get your feet in the snow and get a closer look than the one on the observation deck, head to the Glacier Plateau which has beautiful panoramic views of  Jungfrau and Silberhorn mountains.

Jungfrau Eiger Walk: After having completed the bucket list part of the day, we proceeded onto my favourite part, the Jungfrau Eiger Walk. We've always been a fan of hikes and the opportunity to see both Eiger North Face and the Jungfrau railway up close was one we were definitely not going to miss. To do this walk, after the day at Jungfrau, we caught the train to the Eigergletscher station and from there began the Eiger  walk.

This one hour hike is 2.5km long and goes downhill, running along the Eiger North Face and has plenty of beautiful points to look out for. Our favourites included a beautiful little cottage along the way (pictured), the stunning man made Fallbodensee lake which shines like an emerald gem in the middle of the lush green landscape and the Jungfrau trains passing us by!

Jungfrau is a bucket list item so we were glad we did it even if its a very expensive one however the true highlight of the day was this walk. Being able to take in the breathtaking scenery with almost no other tourists in sight, it truly was a wonderful experience and highly recommended!

If you, like us, are in two minds about visiting Jungfrau, wanting to do it as its iconic but at the same time not sure if its something you'll enjoy, I'll highly recommend following in our footsteps!
