Loving fashion doesn't make you dumb
Wednesday, February 14, 2018
Our lives are riddled with stereotypes and no matter how much we deny, most of us are guilty of falling into their traps on a daily basis. Majority of the time this is in jest but occasionally and often unconsciously, we find ourselves meeting new people and looking at them through the lens of stereotypes. This is a human process and one we can't always tear ourselves away from. But, it's also the reason why it's all the more important to meet different kinds of people who shatter the preconceived notions we may have.
I can rattle off a list of common stereotypes quite easily but let's stick to one particular one for the purpose of this discussion: girls who love make-up must be dumb.
Let's take a quick tally: How many times have you heard comments such as "She wears too much makeup" from people who simultaneously dismiss other girls for not being pretty enough when bare-faced? The testament of this double standard is evident when we view the hundreds of YouTube entries on "How to do no make-up make-up look". The internalised misogyny is astounding and not something we even realise exists.
Despite what the stereotypes tell us, ultimately having an eye for fashion or even an interest in it is just another form of creative expression. And if you pursue this highly competitive field on a professional level, it requires a great deal of business acumen. Make-up which often has the reputation of not being "book smart" at it's core involves - biology and chemistry. I realised this the other day when mixing my silicone based primer with a water based foundation lead to disastrous results.
Personally, I love playing dress-up. Make-up though has never been a hobby or interest. Sure, I wear it occasionally but it's never something I seek out. But that's not to say anyone who pursues it is automatically part of the bimbo brigade. Likewise, hating on it or saying you don't like fashion does not automatically transport you to a higher moral or intellectual pedestal than the rest of us who do.
To sum-up, I encourage you to go back to the source of all iconic fashion advice -- Miranda Priestley in The Devil Wears Prada. As she said, you may think you're more intelligent in your randomly chosen sweater because you put no thought into it than the woman or man who indulges times and effort when deciding their clothes, but you're not. Not based on sartorial interests at least.

Such a well written post! I can definitely relate, I always feel that when I tell someone I have a blog they think I must be super vain or shallow. And now I want to watch the Devil Wears Prada! Good thing I own it on DVD :)

So true! I'm always so envious of people who can put on make-up so well! My eczema prevents me from even putting on mascara, so it is something I'm missing badly too.
ReplyDeleteI also love your clothes in this post! The details on the back of your heels is amazing! :D

Fashion stereotypes are the worst. I hate how people always eye roll and shake it off as vapid. While there are a lot of vapid people out there for the most part fashion lovers who embrace it do so for valid and wonderful reasons. That expression of self for example. It's so important for some people who are too afraid to share their own emotions and do it through fashion and creativity.

Girls who love make-up must be dumb - it was invented by stupid people. Because if a girl wants to somehow be seen in a crowd, she can no longer be bad. She just tries to somehow emphasize her appearance. And I think it's fine.
