24 Hours in Cologne - Find the Best View for Photos
Sunday, October 08, 2017
After Amsterdam's narrow streets and winding lanes, Cologne felt vast, spacious and at the beginning almost a little intimidating. Once we got over the size of the city though, it seemed much like any other major urban centre, at least during the day.
The Cologne Cathedral, the city's crown jewel was tall, imposing and is an absolute beauty to explore from inside but to get the true sense of its dominance, you need to climb atop the Cologne Triangle for a panoramic view of the city. So to catch the golden hour, we left the cathedral, grabbed a coffee along the Rhine and undertook the 1 km walk to Cologne Triangle on the Hohenzollern Bridge or as many often call it, the love lock bridge. Climbing the Cologne Triangle only costs a very affordable 3 euros and with the sun setting and casting a golden glow on the impressive Gothic architecture, it truly was a sight to remember, one that is worth much more. The cathedral at the centre really was the heart of the city, surrounded by the Rhine, old town and the love lock bridge.
Apart from roaming the streets and sipping plenty of coffee by the Rhine, a highlight of this Cologne trip was a visit to 4711 flagship store. 4711 is a traditional Eau de Cologne which has been produced in the city since 1799. The story of its inception is both complex and interesting including a lesson in some very clever marketing. For me though, the attraction also came from a love of collecting perfumes. In recent years, I have become an avid scent collector and while I adore big brands, a large part of me tends to gravitate towards scents that are reminiscent of places and memories. In Cologne we picked up a mandarin and cardamom scent, a fragrance that combines two of my favourite ingredients. We also got the original 4711 Eau de Cologne and an updated version of the same. You can find out more about the scents we chose here. Although we didn't do much other shopping in Cologne, exploring the shopping streets was fun on its own.
While our experience in Cologne wasn't jam-packed with tourist activities and much of it consisted of strolling the streets, shopping and eating at local eateries and international fast food chains, it stood out as perhaps the most metropolitan city. In a trip filled with small towns and cities like Amsterdam, Rothenburg and Ceszy Krumlov (more on that later), Cologne stands out for its ability to cater to the needs of any and every body with its grand yet humble atmosphere.
